How to calculate brick

Find the wall's face area in square feet (length × height), then multiply by 7, the number of standard modular bricks per square foot once you allow for a 3/8-inch mortar joint. Round up and add 5–10% for breakage and cuts.

Bricks = Wall area ft² × 7 (standard modular brick + 3/8" mortar)

Worked example

A garden wall 10 ft long and 10 ft high (100 ft²).

  1. Area = 10 × 10 = 100 ft²
  2. Bricks = 100 × 7 = 700 bricks

Result: 700 bricks (order ~770 to allow 10% waste)

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks do I need?

Multiply the wall's length by its height for the area in square feet, then multiply by 7 bricks per square foot. A 100 ft² wall needs about 700 bricks. Add 5–10% for breakage.

How many bricks are in a square foot?

A standard modular brick (7⅝ × 2¼ in face) with a 3/8-inch mortar joint works out to about 7 bricks per square foot of wall.

How many bricks do I need for a 10×10 wall?

A 10 ft × 10 ft wall is 100 square feet, so it needs about 700 standard modular bricks, roughly 770 with a 10% waste allowance.

How much extra should I order for breakage?

Add 5–10% to your brick count. Cuts at corners and openings, plus the odd broken brick, mean you'll always use a few more than the bare calculation.

Does brick size change the count?

Yes. Larger bricks (like queen or utility size) cover more area, so you need fewer per square foot. This calculator uses the most common standard modular brick at 7 per ft².
