Tile Calculator
Enter your room size and tile size to find how many tiles you need, including a 10% allowance for cuts and breakage. A 12×12-inch tile covers one square foot.
How to calculate tile
Find the room area (length × width) and the area of one tile, then divide to get the number of tiles. A 12×12-inch tile is 1 ft². Add 10% for cuts and breakage, more for diagonal layouts or large-format tiles.
Tiles = (Room area ÷ Tile area) × 1.10
Worked example
A 10 ft × 8 ft floor with 12×12-inch tiles.
- Area = 10 × 8 = 80 ft²
- Tile area = 1 ft²
- Tiles = 80 ÷ 1 = 80
- With 10% waste = 88
Result: 88 tiles (80 + 10% waste)
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles do I need?
Divide the room area by the area of one tile, then add 10% for waste. An 80 ft² floor with 12×12-inch tiles needs 80 tiles, or 88 with the waste allowance.
How many 12x12 tiles are in a square foot?
Exactly one: a 12×12-inch tile covers one square foot.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Add 10% for a standard straight layout, 15% for diagonal patterns, and keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.
How do I calculate tiles for a wall?
Use the same method: multiply the wall's height by its width for the area, then divide by the tile area and add waste.
