How to calculate steps to miles

Multiply the number of steps by the stride length in feet to get total distance in feet, then divide by 5,280 (the number of feet in a mile). For kilometres, divide by 3,280.84 instead. Stride length can be measured directly or estimated from height: stride is about height x 0.414 (the average of the 0.413 ratio for women and 0.415 for men). For example, a person 64 inches tall has an estimated stride of 64 x 0.414 = 26.5 inches (2.21 ft). The default of 26 inches (2.17 ft) is a general adult average.

Distance (miles) = Steps x Stride Length (ft) / 5,280

Worked example

A person 64 inches (5 ft 4 in) tall walks 10,000 steps. Their estimated stride length is 64 x 0.414 = 26.5 inches (2.208 ft).

  1. Stride in feet: 64 x 0.414 / 12 = 2.208 ft
  2. Total distance in feet: 10,000 x 2.208 = 22,080 ft
  3. Distance in miles: 22,080 / 5,280 = 4.18 miles
  4. Distance in km: 22,080 / 3,280.84 = 6.73 km

Result: 10,000 steps at this stride length covers about 4.18 miles (6.73 km)

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your stride length. With a 2.5-ft stride (30 in, typical for a tall man), there are 5,280 / 2.5 = 2,112 steps per mile. With a 2.0-ft stride (24 in, shorter person or child), it takes 5,280 / 2.0 = 2,640 steps. A commonly cited average is around 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile for adults.

How is stride length estimated from height?

Research correlates stride length with height. Women stride at roughly height x 0.413 and men at height x 0.415, so this calculator uses 0.414, the average of the two (the difference is well within the error of any height-based estimate). A person 66 inches tall has an estimated stride of 66 x 0.414 = 27.3 inches. These are population averages; your actual stride may vary with pace and fitness level.

Does walking versus running change steps per mile?

Yes. When you run, your stride lengthens significantly, so you cover a mile in fewer steps. A typical walking step is 24 to 30 inches, covering a mile in roughly 2,000 to 2,640 steps. A running stride can exceed 50 inches, meaning as few as 1,050 steps per mile at a jog. For running distances, measure your running stride on a track for the most accurate result.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

At the average adult stride of 26 inches (2.17 ft), 10,000 steps = 10,000 x 2.17 = 21,700 ft / 5,280 = about 4.1 miles (6.6 km). With a longer stride of 30 inches, 10,000 steps = about 4.7 miles (7.6 km). The typical range for adults is 4 to 5 miles.

What is the difference between a step and a stride?

A step is one foot placement (left foot down counts as 1, right foot down counts as 2). A stride is one full gait cycle: both feet moving through a complete left-right-left sequence. Most fitness trackers count individual steps, so this calculator uses step length (half of a full stride cycle). The conversion factor of 0.413 or 0.415 already gives step length, not full stride length.

How do I measure my actual stride length?

Walk a measured distance such as a 100-ft stretch of pavement and count your steps. Divide the distance by the step count: 100 ft / 40 steps = 2.5 ft per step. Do this at your normal walking pace for the most representative number. Use the measured value in the stride input field of this calculator for a personalised result.
