Sod Calculator
Enter the length and width of your lawn to find how many square feet, rolls, and pallets of sod you need. A standard roll covers 10 ft² and a pallet covers about 450 ft².
How to calculate sod
Find the area in square feet (length × width), then divide by the coverage of your sod unit. A standard sod roll is 2 ft × 5 ft = 10 ft²; a full pallet covers about 450 ft². Always round up and add 5–10% for trimming around curves and obstacles.
Rolls = Area ft² ÷ 10 · Pallets = Area ft² ÷ 450
Worked example
A back lawn 30 ft long and 15 ft wide.
- Area = 30 × 15 = 450 ft²
- Rolls = 450 ÷ 10 = 45 rolls
- Pallets = 450 ÷ 450 = 1 pallet
Result: 450 ft² = 45 rolls or 1 pallet
Frequently asked questions
How much sod do I need?
Measure your lawn's length and width, multiply them for the area in square feet, then divide by 10 for rolls or 450 for pallets. Add 5–10% extra for cuts and waste around edges.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
A full pallet of sod covers about 450 square feet, the Turfgrass Producers International standard. Some farms sell pallets of 400–500 ft², so confirm with your supplier.
How big is a roll of sod?
A standard sod roll measures 2 feet by 5 feet and covers 10 square feet. Larger 'slab' rolls exist, so check the dimensions where you buy.
How much extra sod should I buy?
Add 5–10% to your square footage for trimming around curves, flower beds, and walkways. Irregular yards need closer to 10%.
How many pieces of sod are on a pallet?
A 450 ft² pallet of 10 ft² rolls holds about 45 rolls. Slab-cut pallets hold more, smaller pieces, but the total coverage stays around 450 ft².
